Visiting Mt. Rushmore...

We left Wall and the Badlands and headed to Mt. Rushmore, where we spent almost a week at Heartland Campground in Hermosa, SD. It is a wide open park right off the highway, no trees, flat spaces, a pool, laundry and playground. It is a Passport America park, which made it affordable. Only trouble is, there's nothing in Hermosa. One has to drive to Keystone or Rapid City for restaurants, and Rapid City for grocery shopping. We'll probably find another campground next time we visit the area.

Mt. Rushmore National Memorial provides excellent close up viewing of the presidents' faces. There's a museum detailing how the sculpture came to be with photos and masks of the presidents. If you hike down a quarter mile of steps, you can visit the artist's studio. The hike back up in the rain felt twice as long! In the artist's studio, you can see the original model he created of the sculpture. Blue Bear and Red Bird enjoyed the visit too!
