Catching Up on Life in Vacaville...Chapter One

Wow! Can't believe I haven't posted in over two months. Time just gets away from me sometimes...and other times I'm just plain lazy!

Let's see...how to catch up without writing a novel? Think I'll start with a quick outline...pictures will come later.

We arrived November 24th as planned and got settled in Vineyard Plantation RV Park...boy, the prices sure went up...$925/month plus electricity! Feels like highway robbery.

We've enjoyed many visits and dinners, at home and in restaurants, with all the family and look forward to more. Picture to come in Chapter Two...
The Sibs - Mel, Mardell. Terry, and Jack

Robyn arranged a "Sibling Dinner" in December. Jack and I...Mel and Robyn...Mardell and Bart...and Terry. It was a real treat...thanks for doing all that work Robyn!

We've had several family gatherings with Stacey, Brian, Kayla, Jack, Candice, Chanoa, Sienna and Kathy at Brian and Stacey's...another thanks for all your hard work and great cooking (and grilling).

We spent both Thanksgiving (great turkey) and Christmas Day at Stacey and Brian's with Jack and Candice and all the grandkids. It was special to finally be able to be with them for these holidays.

Before Christmas we got to see Candice and Jack portray Mary and Joseph at a Christmas pageant at their church. It was wonderful to be able to be a part of this.

Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve were spent at Robyn and Mel's along with Tim, Amanda, Tyler and other friends and relatives. Again, both the time and the food were great. Robyn even had hats and tiny champagne bottle bubbles to welcome in 2016.

Football season can not be ignored and it wasn't. We watched most of the games at Mel and Robyn's...including the Super Bowl. Jack and Mel even got to put the lights on the Christmas tree during one game and did a great job! I'm not a football fan but really enjoyed the company...and the snacks...they do awesome snacks! Unfortunately the Carolina Panthers lost the Super Bowl.

A few days before Christmas we rode around with Brian, Stacey, and Kayla looking at Christmas light displays, something I haven't done in a very long time. It was fun and I took lots of pictures!

I think I'll stop here and move on to Chapter Two...

A Good Christmas but Not Such Good health...

She's a monkey!
I've been lazy busy doing nothing much important things this past month and have gotten way behind on my blog posts...so I'll try to catch up.

Last I wrote, it was almost Christmas. It was a great Christmas! Family, good food and fun. We enjoyed a Christmas Eve family gathering at Davis' dad's house...I always look forward to the company and to their white chicken chili...Jack likes the red.  We had a terrific Christmas Day at Becca's. She made a great dinner and it was so good to have the day with them. It would have been a bonus if Michael could have been there too.

Things went downhill after Christmas.  Jack had started feeling bad right before Christmas and went to the doctor the day after...turned out he had bronchitis. I had a sore throat the day after Christmas and, as that eased up, I developed the worst sinus congestion I can ever remember having. It took us both at least three weeks to get over everything. I barely got to spend any time with the kids...managed to pull myself together long enough to spend one day with them and to have a good bye dinner at Becca's just before we left...but no hugging and kissing allowed. We welcomed in the New Year in PJs!
Baby sitting while Mom's at work...

It semed like we no sooner got there and it was time to head out. We felt awful but made the drive to Florida anyway and got settled in at Pensacola RV Park, where we stayed last March. We've been here three weeks now and have done little...mostly just rest and relaxation...though we made it to Sonny's BBQ!  We're finally feeling okay again, just a bit tired. Did manage to get the fifth wheel cleaned and the laundry caught up though.

Today it was a sunny 65 degrees and I had a wonderful afternoon sitting outside reading while Jack took the truck back to Van Noy Tires, where we bought tires last year, and had a leaking valve stem replaced. We'll be here in Florida until early March, then we're headed back to Wilmington for a month of some family time with Katie and Jackson...Becca and Davis too!

In early April we're going to Greensboro to visit Glen and Joanna and Ken, Matthew and Ciera. By mid April winter should be finished and we're going to West Virginia to see Michael...really looking forward to that...haven't seen him in a year and a half!

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas...

We've been back for two weeks...the time is going so quickly! These are the Welcome Home signs Katie and Jackson made for us.

Everyone is over the flu and I've had some good visiting time with both Becca and with Katie and Jackson...and looking forward to more.

Only three days until Christmas. Tree is up and RV is decorated, Christmas cards mailed, gifts bought...they just need to be wrapped.

Our RV...all ready for Christmas...

I went to Enchanted Airlie with Becca, Davis, Katie and Jackson last weekend, it's a yearly tradition for the kids. Jack wasn't feeling well and passed on going...he missed a good time. Happily, he's feeling better now. It was a brisk, clear night and the lights were beautiful. We ended the night with dinner at Brooklyn Pizza, always a treat.

Home Sweet Home...

We are back in Wilmington!  Arrived Saturday, settled into our campsite at the Wilmington KOA, our Wilmington home, and had pizza from Brooklyn Pizza that night...it sure tasted good.

Our plans for dinner with Katie, Jackson, Becca and Davis Saturday night had to be delayed...Becca and Jackson have the flu. :(  Sunday rolled around and I couldn't wait any longer.  We went over for a short visit (if you can call three hours short) and I finally got to hug Katie and Jackson!  Didn't hug my beautiful Becca...we waved from across the room, but Jackson is on the tail end of his flu, so I risked a hug or ten! They each made a cool chalkboard sign welcoming Grandma and Mr. Jack home and had them perched in the transom over the living room entry. Katie admitted she climbed up a side table and leaned waaaaaay out to place hers up there. They've both grown taller, but there're still my silly kids.

We met Pickles...their newest cat.  He looked so little in the pictures six months ago, but he sure is a big now...he's also a sweet boy. Toured the house to see what's new, got my mail and all the Christmas gifts I've recently ordered from Amazon, admired the Christmas tree and Jackson's Lego ornaments and got more hugs.  I didn't take any photos, but you know I will!

The kids didn't want me to leave (and neither did I) but we have lots more visits to look forward to.

Random Reflections...

(Authored by Jack)
The best thing about retirement is having no particular place to be every morning. My only responsibility is walking our dogs, Maggie and Ryan. I really enjoy the fact that the dogs appreciate my efforts. They are quite easily pleased and they don't ask more than a little food, water, and attention. I can handle that. I really love our dogs.

Since Gail and I were married, we've been traveling. We finally got to try out our 5th wheel. We discovered a wide variety of uses for bungee cords after finding many of our belongings misplaced at the next campground. Some of our country's wonderful interstates are in serious need of some TLC, to say the least. Not that we had any loss or damage, but finding things that were once in cabinets on one side of the 5th wheel suddenly on the opposite side concerned us both.

A real downside has been the weather. In Topsail it rained for 3 or 4 days prior to our leaving the campground and we remained under the same storm until we reached our Washington, DC campground two days later. Setting up our 5th wheel and tearing down in the rain is not a task I relish. Oh, and we left 75 degree temperatures and landed in 48 to 53 degrees. I can't wait for winter, right! Overall our trip has gone quite well.

Speaking of our trip, we found many of our greatest national treasures being held hostage both in DC and National Parks. I have some very unkind words for the so called elected "representatives" in DC.  I must admit I will never understand why some people have such an aversion to compromise for the greater good. To be so arrogant as to think they know what the people want without asking is unconscionable. My feeling is when elected officials determine they know best what's good for the country, they should be replaced. We did not put them there to take care of us, we put them there to speak and act on our behalf. Sounds as though changes are required to reacquaint them with reality.

Moving on, we have found we don't like being under large trees with acorns and squirrels. There's nothing like leaning back to take a nap and having dive bombing squirrels dropping acorns on the roof. Will definitely sit you right up when you're half asleep. Autumn's leaves cause problems when closing the slides. Sweeping the roof and slides is required before leaving a campground. Crows can be very athletic when they find a loose acorn on the roof. If you've ever wondered what a soccer game sounds like underground, I can tell you.

We spent one of the best Thanksgivings I've experienced in years in Myrtle Beach. I attribute that to the company I am now keeping. Gail and I went to Ryan's Restaurant and had quiet a dinner. It was buffet style so we got more than we could eat, which we paid for later. Another perk was the price, it was very easy on the wallet and was quite good. The best thing was that we were together and had lots to be thankful for this past year. The soothing sound of the ocean made for a wonderful month on the beach.
We've spent the Christmas holidays in Wilmington. Gail needs to get in a lot of grandma time because after this we head to Florida for two months and then on to parts west. We went to have lunch with the youngsters at school one day, Gail babysat them several times, and we spent Christmas with them. Not to mention the occasional drop-bys from time to time. She has decided that, while on the road, should she miss them too much, she may hop a plane and make a weekend visit. I can't blame her, I fully understand how she feels as I don't get to see my grandkids as often as I'd like.
Wilmington has one drawback: it has one way into town and one way out. Trying to get in or out of the KOA here is tricky and time consuming. Turning right takes a minute or two depending on traffic but turning left can take up to five or more minutes. This is just to get into the center turn lane, getting into traffic sometimes takes more time. I've considered writing a letter to the editor but think it is a waste of time as the town has been this way for years and I guess no one else is complaining.
To be honest, we haven't tried to banish one another to the couch, the dogs haven't tried to leave home, we haven't gone broke nor have we been asked to not return by any of the campgrounds we've stayed at, so I guess we are doing great.
Once we leave Wilmington we are embarking on new ground, places we have no ties to in any way. So far we have been in areas familiar to us and had people close by, but now we will really be on our own. It's both exciting and a little scary but, overall, we are looking forward to the travel and the adventures. Time will tell.   ...Jack

Enchanted Airlie...

We had a great time at Enchanted Airlie! The weather was great and the lights were beautiful. We wandered the gardens, saw Santa, viewed the Lego display, and finished off with dinner at Island Fresh.  It got me into the Christmas spirit...just in time! I also managed to spill hot coffee down my new shirt, but nothing's perfect...  :)

Jackson gave Santa a list of the Lego sets he wanted. Santa said okay...as long as Jackson cleans up all his Legos off the floor!

The Christmas light displays were just gorgeous!

...and the Legos were awesome!

It was a great night! Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!

Home For The Holidays...

We enjoyed our month in Myrtle Beach and I would have hated to leave our campsite by the ocean were we going anywhere but Wilmington. For me, Wilmington is coming home to my daughter and grandchildren, something I always look forward to!

We are here for a month at the Wilmington KOA. We don't usually stay at KOAs as they have gotten pricey over the years but, in Wilmington, the KOA is the only game in town. Our original plan was to go back to Topsail for the month, but choosing between the lower cost of Topsail with a fifty mile round trip to Wilmington and the more expensive KOA five minutes from Rebecca's was a no-brainer for me. So here we are. It is a very nice campground with lots of pull-thru sites and I am so happy being right smack dab in the middle of my part of Wilmington!

This is the first time we have had metered electricity and I'm a little nervous about what the bill will be as we've had some cold nights that necessitated the use of our electric heaters. We've tried to rely more on the propane furnace, but sometimes it just isn't enough to keep warm. It also uses a lot of propane and, oddly enough, the propane always runs out in the middle of the night! Awaking at 3 or 4 AM to find the inside temperature is 55 degrees is not my idea of fun...especially as it requires a trip outside to switch from the empty tank to the full one. Brrrrr!

Digressing for a moment...can you believe we are still finding Lady Bugs in the RV from our Charlotte visit??? We're beginning to wonder if we we'll ever be rid of them. One Lady Bug is cute...dozens, not so much! Edit: Not Lady Bugs, Asian Beetles, their evil twin.

Our first Christmas in our RV presents a few logistical problems such as where to hide presents and where to put a tree. The kitchen table seems to be the only spot for a tree. I would like to use our favorite ornaments so I may try a larger tree next year, but this year we are making do with a 24 inch tree from CVS...it looks cute in the window. The gifts are hiding in plain sight under the table and we have a fireplace on which to hang our stockings so all is well. Maggie seems to like it!

Tomorrow we are going with Becca, Davis, Katie and Jackson to Enchanted Airlie at Airlie Gardens...a Christmas light display, a Christmas LEGO display and, of course, Santa. I'll take pictures!
